Everyone loves to smile. After all, a warm smile is the universal language of kindness, no matter where you are. However, if you aren’t happy with your smile for cosmetic reasons, you may not find yourself showing it off with confidence as often. Fortunately, there are many different solutions that can help to correct imperfections. One of the most common is porcelain veneers. Continue reading to learn more from your cosmetic dentist in Lakeway about what porcelain veneers are and the types of issues that they can fix.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers, are wafer-thin custom-made shells that are designed to cover the front surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. They are bonded to the front of the teeth and eliminate imperfections by changing the color, shape, size, or length of the teeth. They can be placed on just one or multiple teeth and are customized to blend in with the rest of your smile, giving you a natural-looking result.
What Kinds of Issues Can Dental Veneers Fix?
Most of the time, dental veneers are routinely placed for one or more of the following reasons:
- Discoloration: If your tooth or teeth have become discolored from a root canal treatment, medication, fluorosis, large fillings, or other reasons, porcelain veneers are great at covering up the issue, leaving you with bright white teeth.
- Broken or chipped teeth: In many cases, you can fix a chipped or broken tooth with a single porcelain veneer.
- Gaps: If your teeth have minor gaps, having veneers placed can close the spaces between them.
- Uneven or undersized teeth: For whatever reason, if your teeth are smaller than average or uneven, veneers can give them a more proportional and even appearance.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Getting veneers is a minimally invasive procedure that takes place over two or three appointments. After creating a treatment plan, your dentist will remove a small part of your enamel from the surface of the teeth where the veneers will be placed. Next, impressions will be made of your oral structures which will be sent off to a lab where your veneers are crafted by expert ceramists. During your next appointment, they are permanently placed.
By talking to your dentist about the imperfections you want to have corrected and what your goals are for your smile, together you can decide if veneers would be the best option for you.
