1. Quit Smoking

Instead, opt for more mouth-healthy snacks, like cheese, yogurt, vegetables, and fruit (but limit the ones that are super high in sugar).
4. Practice Good Oral Hygiene
Perhaps the most important step in preventing gum disease is having excellent oral hygiene. This means brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. When selecting a toothpaste at the store, make sure to pick one with the ADA (American Dental Association) Seal of Approval. That means it has fluoride, a mineral that makes your teeth stronger and fights decay.
In addition, flossing is massively important when it comes to having healthy gums. It’s the only way to clean out plaque from between your teeth that could cause periodontal disease. Visiting your dentist every six months for a checkup is also crucial. Your dental hygienist can give you a professional cleaning to remove tartar, since it’s impossible to remove it on your own.
